Amazon: error 8541
About this article
This article explains what Amazon error 8541 means, why it occurs, and how to resolve it on ChannelEngine.
Table of contents
Introduction
Error 8541, also known as the single matching error, occurs when your product identifier (e.g.: EAN, ISBN, UPC, or JAN) matches the product identifier of an existing ASIN in Amazon's catalog, but one or more of the other attributes you have submitted – such as title, brand, color, or size – conflict with the content already associated with that ASIN. Amazon uses this error to prevent duplicate or conflicting product listings. The product information tied to that ASIN may belong to a brand owner or another registered contributor.
Cause
Common causes of error 8541 include:
- Your product identifiers (UPC, EAN, JAN, or ISBN) are correct, but the corresponding catalog attributes such as brand name, title, or product type do not match what is already stored for the matching ASIN.
- You are using a UPC or EAN that was purchased from a third-party reseller and has already been assigned to a different product in Amazon's catalog.
- The same product identifier has been assigned to multiple products in your source data, resulting in duplicate submissions.
- A brand owner has locked certain core attributes (e.g.: brand name, product type) so that your content update conflicts with the authoritative content for that ASIN.
- In some cases, Amazon may also return 8541 when the submitted data matches multiple possible ASINs.
Resolution
There are two approaches to resolving error 8541, depending on whether the matched ASIN is the correct product.
The matched ASIN is the correct product
Ensure your submitted attributes match the existing content for that ASIN exactly. You can do this in two ways:
- Update your content to match Amazon's catalog: align your title, brand, color, size, and other conflicting attributes to match what Amazon already has for that ASIN, then resubmit your products.
- Disable content export on ChannelEngine: in Content Mappings, set the Export content attribute to No. This links your offer to the existing product content on Amazon without attempting to contribute new content, which avoids the conflict entirely.
The matched ASIN is not the correct product
If your product has been matched to the wrong ASIN, your source data likely contains an incorrect product identifier. Verify that the correct UPC, EAN, JAN, or ISBN has been assigned to the product in your catalog. If the identifier is correct but Amazon has assigned it to the wrong ASIN, contact Amazon Selling Partner Support and include the following in your case:
- Your SKU ID.
- The conflicting ASIN.
- Supporting documentation such as a GS1 certificate or product images showing the correct product information.
